Sussex Fun Punch Safari 28th March 2004

Event Limited to 20 Vehicles £40 / vehicle - non competitive, just lots of fun.

So what is a fun punch safari ? No its not a merry drinking orgy in the Savannah.

What it is though, is a fun off-road event, miles better than the usual 'pay and play' / £20 to drive around a muddy circuit, until bored or retired due to breakages.
The object of the event is to punch a plastic numbered card - attached to the passengers side of the vehicle, with punchers dotted randomly around a wood. Each punch has a number on it, and it is often the case that these are hidden behind a tree or a bush. There are no tracks through the woods before you begin.
At random each participant gets to pick a numbered token from the hat, and then has to go off and find that number with the puncher on the end of a length of string and negotiate their vehicle up to it. Once punched on your card in the correct grid, its back to the marshal caravan at the start and collect another number token from the hat. If you manage to finish the first card, before anyone else you can start again with a new card attached to the drivers side. (This is much easier if you didn't have a passenger to begin with). However as there are 40 odd punches out in the woods it can take newbie's all day to find them.
Similar idea to winch challenge, except you need a winch to get to the punch.

Being Easter, a chocolate egg was awarded to the first vehicle back to the caravan, when a siren was blown  - of course this never happened when I was back there getting another token, but always when I was at the far end of the woods. :-(

Mud Terrain or A/T are required as road tyres would start to spin when the ground gets churned up thanks to the well endowed Simex fraternity.
Also front and rear recovery points are required.

Top tip we learnt for next time, draw a map. None of us have terribly good memories, and a rough map of the known punches helps later in the day, when you cannot remember where you saw the elusive last number.
